Camp Gan IzzySOLON: Campers at Camp Gan Izzy will be in the swim of things this summer in the Chabad Jewish Center’s new pool.

The public is invited to see it and preview the upcoming summer camp program at a picnic 5:30 p.m. May 10 at 5570 Harper Road.

In addition to swimming and other sports, the children’s camps offer an art studio, theater classes, cooking classes, fundamentals of gardening and weekly field trips that may include roller skating, waterslides or horseback riding.

The center includes five acres and both indoor and outdoor facilities.

The camps, held June 18 – July 27 offer a taste of Jewish traditions in a fun way.

We celebrate all the holidays, Miriam Greenberg said. “Every Friday we have Shabbat parties,” she said. “We may celebrate a holiday out of season. Just because it’s summer doesn’t mean we can celebrate Chanukah and teach the story behind it.”

She said one of the keys to the camp’s success is that the child to counselor ratio is low and the camp uses a buddy system for younger campers.

The Solon Camp Gan Izzy is part of an international group of camps. A Counselor training program is available for boys and girls entering grades 7 – 9.

Sessions last from two to six weeks, and the camp hours are 9 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. Extended care hours are 8 a.m. – 5 p.m. for working parents needing extra time. The cost starts at $350 for a two-week camp.
